The House of the Dragon timeline picks up approximately 172 years prior to the birth of Daenerys Stormborn and the death of her father the Mad King, Aerys – the last Targaryen to sit on the Iron Throne before Game of Thrones begins. Game of Thrones is based on Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, but House of the Dragon is based on his “history” book, Fire & Blood. The book is credited as written by an Archmaester of Westeros, with various accounts on what happened during the Targaryen reign.

An adaptation of the apocalyptic comic book series of the same name, “The Walking Dead” follows groups of survivors who try and stay alive in a zombie apocalypse. The series begins with police officer Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) who awakens from a coma and must lead a group of survivors to safety. Based on the manga of the same name, “Darwin’s Game” is about a supernatural mobile game that forces players to fight each other in real life. The main character, Kaname Sudo (voiced by Yūsuke Kobayashi), is tricked into joining the game and decides to try and end the game once and for all after his friends die playing it. This Showtime series dramatizes the life of King Henry VIII (played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers). While it tells the stories of his (many) wives and mistresses—with plenty of steamy scenes to rival those in Game of Thrones—it also delves into the very GoT-esque political intrigue surrounding his reign and the battles he oversaw.

Taking place 500 years in the future, it centers on humans fighting a war with an alien force comprised of different races in an alliance known as the Covenant.

Then, of course, there’s HBO’s highly acclaimed The Last of Us, which proved that video games can be peak TV fodder and score eight Emmys.

Well, one of the biggest issues with game adaptations is taking iconography and adapting it into a more cinematic language for viewing (rather than playing). In-game, characters (sans Ellie) put on respirator masks at each spore encounter, but their faces aren’t any more obscured, given that the viewpoint is already over-the-shoulder during third-person gameplay. But in a television show, even transparent masks can impact a character’s expression and an actor’s ability to convey emotion. So, just like that, asbestos-esque clouds are no more, instead replaced primarily by sentient spaghetti-like fungal tendrils that protrude from the mouths of infected hosts and provide some of the most haunting imagery in Episode Two. “The environment is almost as much of a character in the games as any of the other characters,” Nolan, one of the TV series’ co-creators, told Looper in a recent interview. These postapocalyptic games offer their players a vast playground in a setting where the normal rules of civilization no longer apply; I think they offer a similar playground for filmmakers—and viewers—to explore.
